At ten o’clock that morning, Susan makes her way down to the dressing room in the medical examiner’s building. Alone in the locker room, she changes into scrubs, pulls a cap over her hair, and slips into gloves. The dissection had started an hour earlier, and she planned it so her time in the pit would be short. She had assisted in postmortems during her rotation in pathology, but viewing this corpse would be difficult. Nick had called her about the body found in the landfill. It was Robin.

She slips on a mask, walks out, and stops for a second to inhale before pushing into the autopsy suite.

Nick is beside the cart, obstructing her view of the corpse. He slides over and she steps in. A large skylight provides illumination for examining the body. In a gown, cap and gloves, Doc faces them. Behind him are two metal tables fifteen feet apart from each other, each joined at one end to metal sinks against the wall. Doc’s azure eyes stare at her over his mask. He raises a gloved hand.

“Almost done,” he says. “Sure you want to be here, Dr. Prescott?”
